Case Study

South Lakeland District Council

The Red Squirrel Media team provided a cost-effective one-stop shop in graphic design for South Lakeland District Council.

After receiving funding from WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) for its Let’s Sort It! recycling campaign, SLDC needed expert help in developing posters, billboards, leaflets, roadshow exhibition stands and buses for its waste minimising/recycling campaign.

At the same time it needed to ensure that all the published information also adhered to strict WRAP guidelines and incorporated the nationally recognised recycling logo.

“The graphics design team sorted everything for us under one roof, making important cost savings for council tax payers,” said Rob Kitchen, SLDC waste and development manager.

“They were efficient and enthusiastic in working to our brief and we soon developed a solid and trusting working relationship.”

As well as providing general promotional material, the team put together a 50-page A-to-Z of local recycling services, which was distributed to over 50,000 households.

Rob said: “The A-Z is a really bright and easy-to-use guide – a ‘you name it, this is how to get rid of it’ directory that has proved extremely popular.”

And they developed an interactive educational website for Key Stage 1,2 and 3 pupils at www.southlakelandrecycling.co.uk.

“The website is very important to us because if we can get school children interested in recycling they will go home and tell their parents, hopefully encouraging more participation in kerbside recycling schemes.

“The colourful website, with its clever interactive games, has been well received by both teachers and pupils and is proving to be a very effective way of carrying on the good work that officers in South Lakeland are doing in visiting schools to talk about recycling.”
